Benz Micro Moving-coil Cartridges
Benz Micro builds moving-coil phono cartridges in Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Switzerland. Founded by Ernst Benz in 1970 and led by owner and chief engineer Albert Lukaschek since 1994, the company remains a small-scale manufacturer where much of the work is done by hand.
Benz Micro’s cartridge designs have evolved over decades, leading to two signal generator types. The Glider, Zebra and Reference S use an iron-cross to form the coils, while the LP-S, Ruby Z and Gullwing use the company’s distinctive square ruby plate generator: a lightweight, non-ferrous structure made of synthetic ruby. Together, they represent two approaches from a company whose cartridges have been admired by reviewers and listeners for more than 50 years.
